establishing public domain |
I'm thinking of submitting an ebook to either Project Gutenberg, MobileRead, or Archive.org and wondered about establishing public domain status for US books published in the period 1923-1964. As I understand, any US book published in that time period must have had its copyright renewed 28 years after the original copyright was granted. Thus to establish public domain for these books, one must determine that there was no renewal in the time period 1950 (1922 + 28) to 1992 (1964 + 28). I wondered if a search of the online Stanford copyright database (that covers this time period) is sufficient to prove that there was no renewal for the purpose of submitting an ebook to these sites?

Stanford has renewals before 1978; The us copyright office has registrations and renewals after 1978.

I would go directly to
http://www.copyright.gov/ and perform a search there. Hope this helps.

Re: establishing public domain |
Hi, I had nearly forgotten about my email, and thanks for replying. I've researched it more since I wrote the question, and found the text files for copyright renewal at PGutenberg, also the database at Stanford University. I've also done searches at the U.S. Copyright Office database but this is limited to 1978 and later.
