This collection of historical education publications is provided by the library of the United States Department of Education, the National Library of Education. Included are historical publications of the U.S. Department of Education such as the annual Report of the Commissioner of Education and Bulletins.

The Report of the Commissioner of Education is an annual survey of the state of education in the United States, covering a range of topics on elementary and secondary education as well as postsecondary and adult education, including the education of minority groups, individuals with disabilities, and education systems internationally. The Bulletins include education statistics, indexes, bibliographies, directories, publications about libraries, and more. Also included in this digital collection are historical textbooks on the natural and social sciences, mathematics, history, geography, language learning, and English grammar and language instruction, as well as readers such as the Appletons' School Readers, the Baldwin and Bender's Readers, the Elson Readers, and the Merrill Readers. These items have been selected from the historical print collections of the National Library of Education, which are comprised of over 16,000 publications of the U.S. Department of Education and its predecessor agencies, more than 23,000 textbooks, mostly dating from the 18th to mid-20th century, some 14,000 monographs published prior to 1923, and 225 journal titles dating 1826-1979.
