The John Carter Brown Library has one of the five largest collections of early Peruviana in the world. It is not just the number of Peruvian imprints of the colonial, independence, and early national periods held by the John Carter Brown Library that is important, however, but the diversity of those materials and in a great many instances, their singularity - being only known copies. The subjects range from ecclesiastical matters, to government papers, to indigenous language studies, and...

The first press in Argentina appeared in Córdoba in 1764, brought by the Jesuits to serve the University there. It lasted only until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. It would not be until 1780 that printing in the viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata would begin again, this time in Buenos Aires. The JCB holds no fewer than 20 imprints from this press printed prior to 1791. During the wars of independence, the Buenos Aires press was the principal voice of the Republican forces, chiefly through...
The JCB’s collection of Mexican incunabula is world renowned. In a recent census of the first books to come off the Mexican presses, between 1539 and 1600, Rosa María Fernánez de Zamora of the National Autonomous University of Mexico found that the John Carter Brown Library holds more than any other library in the world. About half of these may also be found in the JCB’s collection on indigenous languages. The vast majority of these items were purchased from Mexican collector Nicolás...
The Gazeta de Buenos Ayres ran from 7 June 1810 to 12 September 1821 and is a fundamental primary source for Latin America's Independence period. The John Carter Brown Library is fortunate to hold a virtually complete run of the Gazeta , including the Supplements and Extraordinary issues (we hold 805 of 828 issues). As a part of the Bicentennial celebrations of the Wars of Independence in Latin America, the JCB will be digitizing and making freely available on the Internet Archive all of our...
Guatemala was the fourth city in Spanish America to obtain a press, in 1660, brought there from Mexico by Bishop Payo Enriquez de Rivera. The JCB’s collection includes a number of works found nowhere else in the world, including printer and apothecary Cristobal de Hincapié Meléndez’s Virtudes de la habilla del Darien, que llaman de Guathemala from 1739. Four of the books in this collection are included in the Indigenous Languages collection. http://archive.org/details/jcbspanishamerica
While some ephemeral printing appeared in Chile at an earlier date, the first printing press arrived there fairly late, relative to other parts of Latin America. Towards the end of 1811, Mateo Hoevel imported a press from New York, and that press is seen as the first in Chile, producing Chile's first periodical, the Aurora de Chile. The JCB holds a complete run of this pioneering periodical, along with many other unique items. http://archive.org/details/jcbspanishamerica
The Philippines are included within this collection since during the colonial period the islands were administered from Mexico. Manila's first press began in 1593, and was thus the third city in the Spanish overs eas empire to have a press. As with the other two, Mexico and Peru, much of the early output consisted of doctrinal works, often in indigenous languages. The earliest Manila imprint held by the JCB is Arte y reglas de la lengua Tagala printed in 1610....
The John Carter Brown Library holds more books printed in Colombia prior to 1810 than any library in the world, some held nowhere else, and otherwise unknown to bibliographers. Among them is the only known complete copy of Saverien's Historia de las ciencias naturales, printed in Bogota in 1791, whose existence illustrates the broad spread of Enlightenment ideas throughout the Spanish Empire. http://archive.org/details/jcbspanishamerica

Cuba was the first Caribbean island to have a press, begun in 1722 by Flemish merchant Carlos Habré of Ghent. Habré and his successor, Francisco José de Paula, printed only intermittently, and it was not until 1757 that the press began to function more regularly. Of the 29 items in this collection (as of 2012), fully half are only known copies found nowhere else in the world. http://archive.org/details/jcbspanishamerica

A press functioned briefly in Montevideo during the British occupation of 1807, issuing a bi-lingual newspaper titled Estrella del Sur. Yet, only with the eruption of the wars of independence did a press reappear in that city, printing mainly viceregal proclamations. The Infanta Carlota Joaquina, wife of Portugal's prince regent João VI, sent the press from Rio de Janeiro. The royalist publications coming from Montevideo's press sought to counter the Republican press of Buenos Aires....

As with most other regions of Latin America, Venezuela’s first press arrived with the wars of independence. Following the constitution of 1811 and surrounding documents, many were issued by Royalists. Among these is one by Pablo de Murillo, printed aboard the Frigate Diana announcing the terms of Venezuelan General Simón Bolívar’s surrender. As with other parts of this collection, virtually all of these items are known in single copies at the JCB....
Very few imprints have survived or were printed in Puerto Rico in the first quarter of the 19th century. José Toribio Median registered only eight imprints from 1809 to 1817 in his La imprenta en algunas ciudades de la América Española, 1754-1823. The JCB hold sixteen Puerto Rican imprints dating from 1808 to 1828, most of these held by no other institution or otherwise unknown to bibliographers. Among these is the only known copy of El Tapaboca, a satirical piece written against Simón...
