LibriVox recording of Heart of the World by H. Rider Haggard. Read by Paul Hansen.
H. Rider Haggard wrote
Heart of the World in 1895 and it tells of the search for a secret and hidden Mayan civilization living in a long lost city filled with gold and jewels! It is also a love story of a couple willing to give up everything, and I mean EVERYthing, for true love. And it is a melodramatic adventure story of good against evil. I am not sure which side wins... however it is a wonderful read! (Description by Paul Hansen)

Epic Adventure
An adventure and romance that fires the imagination.
Don Ignacio is a pure-blood Indian of southern Mexico / Central America, of direct royal descent from the ancient Mayans. His ardent desire is to overthrow the Europeans and return the Indians as the rightful rulers of the land. After failures in this cause, he learns of an old man who is summoning him as Keeper of the Heart - possessor of half an ancient talisman - to come to him and unite the two halves of the talisman. The ancient prophecy states that when this is done, their desires will come true...
The reader does a good job of immersing in the story. He does have a lot of stumbles and self-corrections, and is thus not very polished or smooth. But I enjoyed his rendition anyway.
