"This documentary explores the nature of prejudice in a dramatic third-grade classroom experiment conducted in a small Midwestern town, a town without ghettos, blacks, or campus unrest. It demonstrates how quickly wholesome, friendly schoolchildren can be infected with the ugly virus of discrimination that leads to frustration, broken friendships, and vicious behavior. From WorldCat: Blues music has its roots in the work songs, hollers, and spirituals of generations of black field hands--and blossomed into an art form in its own right during the social and economic transformations of African-American life in the early 20th century. Ma Rainey took the blues to a wider audience with traveling vaudeville shows, while Mamie Smith's recordings broke down barriers for black artists of all musical genres. With dozens of rare renditions of early blues songs, this...

Created by famed cameraman Burton Holmes, this short newsreel shows the "Streets of Paris" exhibition at the Chicago World's Fair "A Century of Progress" in 1933. The risque nature of the exhibit is a bit dumbfounding to a modern audience, as it features a "nudist colony" and "live model" art class. However most of these appear to be sight gags of one kind or another. One sight that is something to behold is Sally Rand, who performs her famous fan dance...

In the depths of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised the American people a “New Deal.” Over the decade 1933-43, a constellation of federally sponsored programs put millions of jobless Americans back to work and helped to revive a moribund economy. The result was a rich landscape of public works across the nation, often of outstanding beauty, utility and craftsmanship. No city, town, or rural area was untouched by the New Deal. Hundreds of thousands of roads,...

DESCRIPTION
Ephemeral films are non-fiction films usually made for educational, industrial, or promotional purposes. The two classic ephemeral film collections found on the Archive are the Prelinger Archives and AV Geeks.
In addition to these classic collections, you may view guidance films from the post-World War II British government, drive-in movie intermission ads, and videos documenting the history of San Francisco from 1906 to the early 21st Century. Many of these films are available for free download.
