China's export boom has surged Chinese share in the global export market and has created general concern as to the threat China poses to both U.S. economic dominance and to the developing economies directly competing with Chinese manufacturing. The recent focus of Chinese investment in Mexican manufacturing has generated considerable press and commentary about the danger of Chinese influence in the very backyard of the United States. Concentrating on the maquiladora sector, this paper examines...

This thesis examines the origins of the conflict which engulfed the former Yugoslavia in 1991. Findings will indicate that the violence within this culturally diverse and historically multi-ethnic region of Europe was not driven by ancient ethnic sentiments, nor was it a 'civil war' between 'traditional tribal rivals' --fighting for 'hundreds of years'--; but was rather the direct result of a within-group (intra-state/inter-cultural) political struggle. The study will demonstrate that the...

Disagreement continues over events that resulted from the country's largest and most controversial natural disaster: Hurricane Katrina. Casualties that occurred during Katrina due to poor evacuation procedures and inconsistent responses in search and rescue have been examined in the media and academia. Quick dissemination of information about new vulnerabilities and attacks is essential to time-critical handling of threats in information security, but little systematic tracking has been done of it. We report on tools we have developed to collect relevant sentences, with a particular...

This paper involves an in-depth study of the art of command at all three levels of warfare. It examines this art through the eyes of one of Napoleon's Marshals, Louis N. Davout. The paper addresses and accomplishes three primary goals. First, it defines act of command and shows its relevance to modern day warfare. Second, the paper shows that Marshal Davout was the best of Napoleon's generals and had an art of command that rivaled the Emperor himself. Finally, the paper demonstrates how Davout...

A simplified approximate theory is presented by means of which the laminar boundary layer over an insulated two-dimensional surface may be calculated, a linear velocity profile being assumed, and an estimate made of its effect in changing the pressure distribution over the profile upon which the boundary layer is formed. Skin friction is also determined. Comparisons of results from this theory are made with experimental results at a Mach number of 6.86 and a Reynolds number of 980,000.

In this paper we describe a real time algorithm for a missile-based IR tracking system. A correlation-based tracker is considered to be the primary tracker, while a feature-based tracker is chosen to provide support on a secondary level. A prescreener runs concurrently with the trackers to provide a list of probable target centroids. This information is used to provide a level of confidence to the tracker. The tracker subfunctions are implemented in both programmable logic hardware and software...

The skin of an aircraft can vibrate as a result of pressure waves caused by engine and/or aerodynamic effects. In modern fighter aircraft such as the F/A-18, overall sound pressure levels have been recorded up to 170 dB over the surface of the skin. In the F/A-18, cracking has occurred in the lower nacelle external skin, typically along the boundaries of the panel. These cracks often originate from a fastener line and grow along the boundary and then turn into the centre of the panel. In the...

This paper highlights the current state of art of Micro and Nano technologies and also describes the Research and Developments activities going on at EADS-Space transportation with CNES and ESA. A diverse range of MEMS COTS/MOTS (MEMS Commercial off The shelf) are available in the markets that are primarily applicable to Space Transportation vehicles particularly on the Telemetry Sub systems with some specific upgrading activities. For the End-User reliability assurance is an integral part of...

The Dry Deck Shelter (DDS) is a hyperbaric system used on submarines to transport SEAL delivery vehicles into an operating area. The system uses air from submarine banks to ventilate the DDS and provide breathing air to the divers. Because of the lack of carbon dioxide (CO2) monitors, ventilation schedules are currently based on predictions to avoid exceeding the within-DDS CO2 limit of 1.5% (15,000 ppm) surface equivalent (sev). To improve efficiency of DDS ventilation, we proposed using...
