One of the finest English essayists
George Orwell was perhaps the finest English essayist in the mid-twentieth century, comparable to Christopher Hitchens later on. He wrote clearly and knowledgeably in a beautiful flowing English free of frills and baggage. He was also witty.
The included book, 'Homage to Catalonia', about the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) is one of the classics of warfighting literature, it should be read by anyone who thinks of real war as a romantic business, or as some sort of video game. Orwell was at that time a far-left intellectual with Communist sympathies and his experiences in Spain were disillusioning, to say the least. But they provided the background for his later novels '1984' and 'Animal Farm' which have made his name famous throughout the world.
