This, the first edition of the collected plays of William Shakespeare, is commonly known as the First Folio. Printed in London and issued in 1623 by Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount, the First Folio contains 36 plays, 18 of which had never before appeared in print, including Macbeth, The Tempest, and Julius Caesar. Before the First Folio, a number of Shakespeare's plays had been published in various smaller formats that frequently contained significant textual divergences between editions.

According to both Norton and to Rothschild, vol. 1 was issued in two states. In this copy the peculiarities of format, printing, and publication ascribed to the first edition, second state of vol. 1 are all present. In particular, leaves X4, a4, and b2 are not cancelled. Vol. 2 of this copy is, however, taken from the second edition. See both bibliographies for further detail on the publication history of the various editions
