A schoolbook used to teach craftspeople how the No. 5 Crossbar works. From the Connections Museum, Seattle
Topics: 5xb, crossbar, telephone switch, at&t, bell system, bell labs, western electric
The Bell System Practices were a set of documents produced by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company to instruct employees on the proper use and maintenance of all kinds of telephone equipment. As these materials span decades of the history of (what was at the time) the world's largest corporation, the quality varies widely. Some documents are carefully phototypeset originals, some are enlargements from microfilm, and still others are third-generation photocopies of typewritten originals.
Topics: Bell System, telephone, ATT, American Telegraph and Telephone, phone equipment, manuals

A bootstrap program is a method used to get a program 'foot' into the door of the memory. In other words, when a volitile store loses its memory due to a system outage or program bug, an I/O device containing a backup copy of the program will be read in usually through a hardware-software handshaking to reload memory. Bootstrap programs are the software end of this reload and range from an absolute reload of all memory to a sophisticated selective partial reload of only mutilated memory. The...
